Privacy notice

NURU EXPRESS AGENCY (PTY) LTD, Reg. No 2018/017364/07, Prime Towers Building, Office 206, 296 Francis Baard Street, Pretoria 0002. We are the responsible party for the information described here.

Last updated 12 September 2026. The terms of service are on the terms page.

The short version

We hold what we need to move your money and to prove afterwards that we moved it. We do not sell it, we do not advertise with it, and nobody outside the company sees it except the operators who carry the payment and the authorities who are entitled to ask. You can ask us what we hold about you at any time.

What we record when you send or collect money

For the person sending and the person collecting:

  • Full name, and date of birth where we hold it.
  • Phone number, as a dialling code and a national number. This is how we find you and how a transfer reaches the right person.
  • The country and town, and a street address where you have given one.
  • An e-mail address, if you gave one.
  • The type and number of an identity document, and its expiry date, where the amount or the law requires it.

For each transfer:

  • The amount, the currencies, the rate and the fee applied, and the corridor it travelled.
  • How the money was paid in, and how it was paid out: cash at a counter, a mobile money number, or a bank account.
  • The branch and the member of staff who booked it, and the one who paid it out.
  • The reference, the pickup code while it is unpaid, the purpose you stated, and any note a member of staff added.

Photographs and documents

Where the law or the amount requires us to verify who you are, we keep an image of the identity document you presented, front and back, and in some cases a photograph of you holding it. Where you paid into our bank account we keep the slip or the screenshot you sent us. Where we pushed money to a phone or a bank account we keep the operator's confirmation, which is what we produce if a beneficiary says nothing arrived.

These files are stored privately, not on the public internet. When a member of staff opens one, the link that shows it expires after a few minutes and cannot be forwarded or bookmarked.

What the app and this website record

  • When you sign in: the time, and the address your device connected from.
  • A code sent to your phone by SMS, so we can confirm the number is yours. The code is short-lived and is not reusable.
  • A notification token for your device, if you allowed notifications, so we can tell you when your money has been collected. It identifies the device, not you.
  • On this website, nothing about you. There is no advertising tracker and no analytics cookie on these pages.

The record of who did what

Every action our staff take on your transfer is written down with their name, the time, what changed, and the address they worked from. This is how a dispute about your money gets settled, and it is the reason we can answer a question about a transfer from two years ago. It is kept whether or not anything went wrong.

Who else sees it

  • The mobile money operator or the bank that carries the payment. They receive the beneficiary’s name and number, because that is how the money reaches them.
  • The company that delivers our SMS messages, which receives your phone number and the message.
  • Our own staff, and only the part their work needs: a cashier at a counter sees the transfer in front of them, not the whole book.
  • The South African Financial Intelligence Centre, the Reserve Bank, the tax authority and their equivalents in the countries we pay out in, where they are entitled to ask.
  • A court or the police, where we are ordered to produce something.

We do not sell your information, we do not rent it, and we do not pass it to anybody who wants to advertise to you.

Where it is kept

Our systems run on servers rented from a commercial hosting provider. Some of the companies above, the SMS carrier and the notification service in particular, operate outside the countries we serve, so the information they need to do their part crosses a border. We use providers who commit to protecting it to the standard the law requires of us.

How long we keep it

Money transfer records and the identity documents behind them are kept for five years after the transfer, which is the period South African anti money laundering law requires of us. We cannot delete them before then, even at your request, and we would be breaking the law if we did.

After that period we remove what we no longer have a reason to keep. An account you have stopped using is closed rather than erased where it is attached to transfers we must still be able to account for.

What you can ask us to do

  • Ask what we hold about you, and get a copy of it.
  • Have something corrected if it is wrong. A misspelled name on your file is worth fixing before it stops a payout.
  • Have deleted what we are not required to keep.
  • Object to how we are using something, and ask us to explain the reason we rely on.
  • Complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa if our answer does not satisfy you.

Write to nuruexpressagency@gmail.com with your phone number and, if you have one, a transfer reference. We answer within 30 days. There is no charge for asking.

Children

Our service is for adults. We do not knowingly open an account for anybody under 18. A beneficiary can be a minor collecting with a guardian, and in that case we hold the guardian's identity rather than the child's.

If something goes wrong with your information

If information about you is exposed, we will tell you and the Information Regulator as soon as we reasonably can, and we will say what happened, what it covered and what we have done about it.

Changes to this notice

When we change this notice we change the date at the top. If a change affects what we do with information we already hold about you, we will tell you rather than leave it on a page for you to find.

This notice was prepared in plain language from how the platform actually works. It is not legal advice and it has not been reviewed by an attorney: NURU EXPRESS should have its legal counsel check it against POPIA and the FIC Act, confirm the retention period and the regulators named above, and replace this text with the reviewed version before the public opening.
